The Swamps Of Florida (15th - 22nd of March 2009)
With the intention of capturing some 1000year old huge cypress trees in the swamps of Florida, I packed my gear and insect repellent together with a pair of boots so hard a "gator" (an alligator) would have a hard time getting its teeth on my toes. I found it hard to find affordable tour guides before actually travelling to Florida so I decided that I will drive myself to my planned destinations.

I arrive on Sunday afternoon and spend the rest of the day with a friend of mine trying out the seafood and some exotic Cuban cocktails. I feel motivated and ready to start exploiting selected locations. Two calls from home in the early hours of the morning combined with jet lag put me 24hrs behind schedule.

By Tuesday I am well rested, the sun is up and I can smell the spring breeze for miles unending. First stop on my list is The Fisheating Creek near Palmdale. Two and a half hours later I am right on target thanks to the SAT NAV. But I am confronted with my first disappointment as I am told that the level of the river is too low for kayaking due to lack of rain for many months now. I remain disappointed for about 10minutes then I get back in the car and head for Lake Istokpoga near Lake Placid. This time around the SAT NAV was not so helpful it lead me to an isolated road where I got stock in sand. I spent the next one hour digging out sand with a 10cm wide stick. Nature is merciful so it sends a guy with a monster of truck in my direction and he gracefully pulls my car out of there. Its 4:30pm and I still have not taken any photographs. As I was heading for the south shores of Lake Istokpoga, I came across a camping ground with visibly loads of boats. I thought to myself "here I definitely will find a happy camper".And I did. Mr. George Ripberger a police retiree took me on a tour of the lake on his boat where I captured some beautiful images. I stayed the night a motel as I finished shooting just before sunset.

Wednesday was an equally dramatic but yet a good day. Target destination was The Dead Lake. Upon arrival I realized there was no one offering guided tours of the lake. I attempted to lour some fishermen into earning "a few bucks" by giving me a tour of the lake but they would not have that. Fishing was far more interesting. I kept my faith and just waited by the lake until about 5:00pm. I made the same proposal to John as he loaded his boat into the lake. He agreed and we where off within minutes. I did not see what I was looking for. I was disappointed but again nature had another trick. John happened to know the perfect place for me. That's how Lake Disston came into my itinerary and perfect it was for it had exactly what I was looking for.

Thursday morning I headed to Islamorada to look for some interesting subjects among the mangrove trees
in the "bone fish flats" (shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean). Stormy clouds graced the big skies and later that
afternoon the long awaited rain came.

On Friday I decided to rest for I was starting to feel the tiredness from fourteen hour days. I did some coastal
shots and relaxed to a big breakfast before crashing.
